High Holiday Melodies at Temple Aliyah
Torah & Haftarah
The High Holiday Torah readings, as well as the Haftarot readings (with the exception of Jonah) and their blessings, have been recorded by Cantor G as mp3 files. You can listen to them simply by clicking on the links below, which will open the appropriate media player, depending on your system (Windows vs Mac) and your browser settings. You can also right-click the link (or control-click on the Mac) and save the file to your disk. These files are also available on CDs (one for Rosh Hashanah, one for Yom Kippur) free of charge to any congregant by calling the Temple office at 781-444-8522.
If you have any questions about these files, please contact Cantor G.
Trope Exercises: A special trope is used for High Holiday Torah reading (except at Yom Kippur Minchah, when the usual Shabbat trope is used). The trope for the haftarot is the same as that used for any haftarah. Here are trope practice exercises:
Blessing After the Haftarah: Click here for the blessing following the Haftarah for both days of Rosh Hashanah. There is a special version of the blessing when the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat. The blessing after the Haftarah on Yom Kippur are included in the mp3 file for the Haftarah itself, but there is a special version of the blessing when Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat.
Aliyot: There are 5 aliyot on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and 6 on Yom Kippur (plus the Maftir on both days), but the number is increased to 7 if either falls on Shabbat. Therefore, some aliyot are assigned differently if the day coincides with Shabbat. In that instance, the letter "S" follows the aliyah number. For example, the 4th aliyah on the first day of Rosh Hashanah falling on a weekday is the same reading as the 6th aliyah if the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat.
Click on the files in the first column for an mp3 file of the reading for each aliyah. Click on the files in the second column (Book, Chapter and Verse) for PDFs with the Hebrew text for the reading.
