Purim is always a fun time at the Temple with events for all ages. Rabbi Perkins, Cantor Bogomolni, Bryan Wexler and Dr. Bev are already hard at work preparing their costumes! Saturday night, February 27 is a "Megillah according to the Beatles," with the celebration running from 7 to 10 pm. Sunday February 28 has a traditional Megillah reading, activities for the kids at the Religious School and the Purim Carnival. |
MOVIE NIGHT AND GUEST SPEAKER – HOLY LAND HARDBALL
Please join Kesher and Men’s Club for movie night on Sunday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Temple. “Holy Land Hardball” tells the story of a group of players and executives as they try to create Israel’s first professional baseball league. Eric Holtz, a player/coach in the movie, will join us to speak about his own personal experience playing baseball in Israel. Please join us for an evening of Israeli baseball! RSVP if you plan on attending (and impromptu attendance is always welcome).
Have you not always marveled at
Israel’s ability to grow such lovely produce?
Dr. Shimon Anisfeld, senior lecturer and
research scientist from the Yale school of forestry
had an entirely different way to think about the use
of Israel’s limited water resources. He presented a
talk sponsored by Men's Club and Coffee, News and
Israel on Jan. 31. We had a filled room of interested
people with a tasty breakfast, thanks to Nelle, and
listened as Dr. Anisfeld presented information that
would certainly not be easily accessible to many of
us. Dr. Anisfeld is a member of
Friends of the Earth Middle East; a group of
scientists throughout the Middle East who support
collaborative approaches to tough environmental
issues.
It is just one alternative path to cooperative and
peaceful initiatives across Middle Eastern
boundaries.
On March 21,
Coffee, News and Israel will host another speaker,
Rabbi Michael Cohen of the Arava Institute in Israel
where scientific work again enables people of
various Mideast countries to collaborate and learn
from each other. Mark your calendars and save the
date to learn of their innovative work.
Also in March, Cantor
Bogomolni will present two post-Kiddush sessions on
leading the weekday evening service. Please see
attached
flyer.
Even if you know how to lead the service, we may
focus on how to help non-Jews be comfortable at a
Shiva minyan. So please save those Shabbat dates. If
we need more time to learn, we will
schedule that.
Last, belated thanks to the many
people who played a part in producing our Shabbaton.
It was a truly collaborative and community building
effort on the part of so many people - which is what
made that weekend to be as meaningful as it was.

INVITATION TO JOIN THE TEMPLE ALIYAH GROUPS ON LinkedIn and FaceBook
Synagogues are strongest when their
members feel connected and can count on each other for
support. In an effort to expand opportunities for
members of Temple Aliyah to connect with each other, we
have created a group on LinkedIn called “Temple
Aliyah, Needham MA.” This group is open to members
of Temple Aliyah only. Howard Hirsh has graciously
agreed to be the group admin. It is our hope that
members of Temple Aliyah may bring value to each other
by expanding their business and professional networks
through this forum. Congregants, including those who are
in search of new professional opportunities, may
identify other synagogue members who are also “Linked
In” and initiate and participate in discussions within
the group. Perhaps members will be able to lend each
other business or professional referrals through this
group.
We also now have a
group on FaceBook. This is a social
networking site—well, if you’re already on FB, you know
what it is, and if you’re not—well, if you do join we
hope you’ll join our group. David Eisenberg and Howard
Hirsh are the co-admins of this closed group. This will
be for informal discussions, exchanging news and views
on Jewish and communal topics, photos, and fun.
The Boston Jewish Music Festival, co-founded by our very own Joey Baron, will take place
March 6 through 14 in venues in and around greater Boston. The organizers have put together a fantastic collection of Jewish music to fit a wide range of ages, tastes and pocket-books! Of particular interest to our Temple community is Hazzanapalooza, on Sunday, March 7 at 3 pm, at Temple Israel in Natick. This concert will feature some of the area's best known Cantors and song leaders, including TA's own Cantor Bogomolni.

School vacation week is a great time to visit Boston Medical Center and see its Food Pantry and Pediatric Grow Clinic. BMC was one of the participating organizations in the Social Action Committee's Food for Thought event in November 2009. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals and families who want to learn how a city hospital works. Please join the tour with other Temple members on Friday, February 19 from 10 to 11 am. Participation is open to all with no maximum limit. Children over 9 years of age are welcome. If interested, RSVP to Devon Wilson-Hill or at 617-414-5530. Please contact Judy Lee with any questions. |
