Kadima made mishloach manot and sold them at the Purim  Carnival. The money will help a family that's about to move  out of a homeless shelter.

There are several ways to do tikkun olam, world repair, at Temple Aliyah. Some examples are: volunteering at a soup kitchen, organizing a coat drive, being part of the Aliyah Teen Team for the Walk for Hunger, going to sing at a retirement home, and learning about Jewish values and environmental issues. The biggest project in 2000-2001 was working on issues related to homelessness in the Boston area.

Teens at Needham High School may fulfill their community service requirements through these or other opportunities.

Teens Work to Solve Homelessness, One Family at a Time

"Saving one life is like saving an entire universe" -Mishnah Sanhedrin

The teens have led the way in the One Family Initiative, a project that pairs Temple Aliyah with a family and a homeless shelter.

Advocacy and Education:

  • Sukkot dinner and letter writing campaign to get a bill passed in MA to created more funding for adequate shelters for families, and another for affordable housing
  • A woman who had been homeless came to tell her story to seventh graders and high school students

Family:

  • Temple Aliyah was partnered with a family, Wanda and her eight year old son and one year old daughter
  • Fundraising for money to help Wanda pay first and last month's rents, security deposit, and other expenses
    • USYers kidnapped Cantor Gelman and held him for ransom, raising over $400
    • 7th grade mitzvah dinner raised $1100, which went toward buying Wanda a bed
    • Kadima made mishloach manot to sell at the Purim carnival
  • Temple Aliyah members donated furniture and home supplies, and then helped the family move from shelter to apartment

Shelter: Project Hope, which supports eight to ten single mother families.

  • Synagogue wide project to make Welcome Baskets. Teens made baskets for moms, with essentials such as toothpaste, shampoo, soap, lotions
  • Cookie Baking - teens went to the shelter and baked yummy desserts for the families and staff
  • Yard cleanup - Teens and parents cleaned up the back yard and planted flowers
