  • Social Action at Aliyah

The Temple Aliyah Social Action Committee, inspired by the Jewish tradition of engaging in mitzvot dedicated to tikkun olam, provides opportunities for members of the congregation to learn about and inspire action in response to Jewish issues of social justice that occur on local, national and international levels. The two biggest social action events of the year are Mitzvah Day and the Walk for Hunger, both of which occur in May.

Mitzvah DayMitzvah Day features projects for all ages, at Temple Aliyah and in the community. Activities include such things as making memory scrapbooks for Alzheimer’s patients, making fleece blankets for Cradles for Crayons, playing games with Charles River Industries residents, singing at Avery Manor, playing bingo at the Walker School for Children, serving dinner at Woods Mullen Shelter and craft projects and cooking with learning disabled adults at Jewish Family & Children Services.

WalkforhungerTemple Aliyah’s Staying Connected group organizes a team to walk part or all of the Walk for Hunger route from Boston to Newton, and is open to members of the community of any age. This is an ideal activity for families with older children and for the Staying Connected crowd.

GBFBThe Social Action Committee also organizes frequent visits to the Greater Boston Food Bank to help sort donated food that GBFB collects and provides to almost every food bank and soup kitchen in Eastern Massachusetts. This is a fun activity for adults and teens 16 and older.

On the Social Action webpage there are a number of other programs in need of volunteers and support year-round. You can also join the Social Action Committee at Temple Aliyah at any of our upcoming meetings. Check the calendar for the schedule. For more information, send us an e-mail.

Remember, you put the U in COMMUNITY!
