Beverly
Schwartz-Katsh has been the Director of Education at Temple Aliyah
since 1998. She earned a B.A. from New York University and worked
for a year as a caseworker, a pivotal experience in shaping her
views on social responsibility. She earned a Masters degree in Elementary
and Early Childhood Education from Smith College, was a 4th and
5th grade teacher, and then completed a Doctorate in Early Childhood-Special
Education at the University of Massachusetts, where she had a teaching
fellowship. Her research and doctoral dissertation focused on the
interaction patterns of fathers and infants. She summarized these
findings in an article in The
Journal of Family Issues (1980).
Dr. Bev, as she is affectionately known at the Temple,
was a college instructor, principal of a community religious school
and education director of a Conservative congregation before coming
to Aliyah. Making Jewish living and learning more inviting is one
of Dr. Bev's professional concerns. The Gil HaMitzvot Curriculum
that she developed for the seventh grade has helped the b'nai
mitzvah students understand how we, as Jews, should incorporate
Jewish values into our daily lives. Starting the gan (kindergarten)
and M'silot (special needs) programs, promoting inclusion,
and helping every student to feel that he or she is a valued member
of the Temple Aliyah community have been other areas of interest
and opportunities for modeling how Jewish values can influence decision
making.
Dr. Bev has been very active in the Jewish educational
community, including serving as Secretary and Vice President of
the New England Region Jewish Educators' Assembly, member of the
Working Group on Special Education of the Combined
Jewish Philanthropies, and a presenter on special needs for
the New Educator Institute of the Bureau
of Jewish Education.
Dr. Bev is married to Ethan Katsh and has three children,
Rebecca, Gabriel, and Gideon. She also has a dog named Marley (the
only one in her family who doesn't speak any Hebrew).
