PRESIDENT

Stephen Baum assumed the role of President of Temple Aliyah on July 1st, 2009, after an instructive year as President Elect under Peter Seresky’s tutelage. His wife Lynn has been an active member of the Temple for 17 years, and Stephen joined her as a member after converting to Judaism 12 years ago. He served as President of Men’s Club for six years.

Stephen Baum was raised in Danville, California. He has also lived in Chicago, Portland, Oregon, Salt Lake City, and Vernon, Arizona (population 14—at least when he was in town).

For most of the last 27 years, Stephen has been trying to teach computers how to read the printed page, first at Kurzweil Computer Products, and currently at Kurzweil Educational Systems, where he serves as Vice President of Engineering. The fruits of that technology are products for people who have trouble with print, either because they cannot see it (the blind and low vision populations), or because they cannot effectively read it (due to dyslexia, ADHD, or simply because it’s in a language they can’t comfortably read).

If he had any spare time, Stephen would be reading, bicycling, hiking, or running. He has walked the John Muir Trail, the High Sierra Trail, and the Routeburn track, and has bicycled across the United States roughly one and two thirds times. (Ask him how he met Lynn.)

Stephen and Lynn have lived in Needham for the past 24 years. They have one son, Nathaniel, who will be attending UMass Boston this year for a Masters in Education and his teaching certificate.
