Our condolences go out to Temple member Ellen Baker and her family on the loss of Ellen’s father, Fred Saftler.  The funeral will be held Sunday at Temple Beth Am in Randolph at 2 pm.  Shiva will be  held at the home of Ellen’s mother, Beatrice Saftler, in North Falmouth.

Condolences also go out to our staff members Nelle and Tony Whittemore on the recent passing of Nelle’s brother. The funeral was in Indiana last week.

May the Divine Presence comfort them, among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

A belated Mazal Tov goes out to TA member Maxine Krengel, who was recently named Needham Hadassah’s “Woman of the Year.”

Dr. Jonathan Wilson, chair of the English Department of Tufts University, will discuss his novel, A Palestine Affair, a novel of political intrigue and romance set in 1924 in Palestine under the British mandate, at this co-sponsored breakfast this Sunday Morning, November 2, immediately following minyan, from 9:45-11:00. Autographed copies of the book will be on sale at our book fair (see below).

Our Annual Book Fair will take place on Sunday, November 2nd from 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday, November 3rd from 3:15-6:45 p.m., and Tuesday, November 4th from 3:15-5:15 p.m. A great selection of both adult and children’s books will be available.

We will have two visitIng authors this year. In addition to Professor Wilson (see above), Alan Radding, author of the book Miracles: Stories for Jewish Children and Their Families, will be speaking with student and parent groups throughout the morning on Sunday, November 2nd.

Join together with others on Friday, November 7th at 6:15 p.m. for the Holiday School Kabbalat Shabbat service to welcome Shabbat, followed by a delicious Shabbat dinner (you don t have to prepare!) After dinner we’ll sing some of the songs our children have been learning during Holiday School (song sheets will be provided).

In coordination with the Boston Jewish Film Festival, Temple Aliyah will be showing an Israeli feature film, A Trumpet in the Wadi, on Sunday, November 23, at 7:30 pm. This modern tragic love story will be the first of a special 3-film series at the Temple this year. Tickets are $8.00 per person and the price includes movie refreshments. Although tickets may be purchased at the door, reservations are recommended. For more information on this film and the others, check out the web page.

As mentioned above, the Boston Jewish Fim Festival is under way throughout the greater Boston area. Check out the BJFF web site for all of the details.

The Women’s Auxiliary of the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center is sponsoring a breakfast and conversation with Rabbi Emily Lipoff and Dr. Cynthia Pill, entitled “What About Me: What do we owe the people we love?” on Thursday, November 20 at 8:45 a.m., at the Pinebrook Country Club. David Sherman is seeking out trivia buffs for a fun night of “Quizrael” next Saturday evening, November 8th. This is the 2nd annual international Internet quiz of Israeli and Jewish trivia. Proceeds benefit new immigrants in Israel. This is an on-line international contest, and Dave is looking to gather a team of 8-12 members. If you can answer such questions as:
=Over the course of what Jewish holiday were 14,000 Ethiopian Jews airlifted to Israel in 1991?
=A style of Jewish music, which originated in Eastern Europe, got its name from a combination of the Hebrew words, “instruments” and “song.”  What is the name of this Jewish music style?

CJP’s annual Super Sunday appeal will take place this year on November 23. Temple Aliyah has sent a delegation of volunteer callers in the past, and we’d like to do so again this year. It’s great for CJP, for the entire Jewish commiunity, and for TA. If interested, please contact Lesli Reich.

We’re looking for an organized, detail-oriented, people-friendly person interested in maintaining our library, increasing our selections, and developing and coordinating new programs. Mark your calendar for this year’s Shabbaton weekend, which is on December 5 and 6. Our Shabbaton Artist-In-Residence, Rahel Musleah, will introduce us to the Jews of India, her distinctive heritage, and share stories, songs and her personal history. Parents of College Students:  In order for your students to receive mailings from the Rabbi, and also holiday packages from Sisterhood, we need updated information.  We do not plan to send Hanukah packages this year, since the holiday coincides with the December vacation break and most students will be home. However, Sisterhood does plan to send Passover goodies in the spring.  If you would like your child to receive mailings from the Rabbi throughout the year, and also a goody package at Passover, please send your college student’s name and mailing address, as well as e-mail address and year of expected graduation, to Rachel at rachel@templealiyah.com.
