High Holidays
Looking for the schedule of services for Yom Kippur? Here it is.

If you would like to check out the High Holiday information book online, complete with clickable links from the Table of Contents, you can find it here as a pdf file.

If you haven’t yet returned your High Holiday Appeal pledge card, please do so at services on Yom Kippur, turn down the tab to reflect your donation, and return it to one of the ushers. In case you were out of town and missed it, or if you’d like to experience it again, you can read Lesli’s Presidential Appeal speech here.

Young Families! Please planning to join us for the new young families’ High Holiday services for parents with babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers. These new afternoon services are lay-led and will use songs, stories and movement to help our youngest members celebrate the holidays in ways that are age-appropriate and fun for parents and children. The Yom Kippur service will be on September 25 from 4-5 pm. If you have a stuffed toy Torah, or a real Shofar kids can touch. please bring them along.

On Erev Yom Kippur, Temple Aliyah participates in a special Yom Kippur Food Drive to help families in our community who are served by the Family Table program. Please remember to bring soup and tuna (only these two items please!)
when you come to Temple on Erev of Yom Kippur! Please do not bring in any food items on Yom Kippur this year, since it is also Shabbat. Your contribution is greatly appreciated! In past years we have collected about 100 bags of food and we want to do even better this year.

Todah Rabbah to Jenson’s Cleaners on Chapel Street in Needham for donating the cleaning of our talitot over the summer. (And no, they didn’t take the knots out of the tzitzit!) We encourage all members to support this fine establishment.

Sukkot
Only five days after Yom Kippur! A full schedule of services and programs for Sukkot can be found here, and here is a list of Sukkot planning events.

You still have a great opportunity to have your own sukkah! But you must act quickly (today)! The Men’s Club and USY are joining forces to make this Mitzvah as easy as possible this year. For a donation of $350, they will deliver and build an 8 by 12 foot Sukkah on your property. If you’d like, they will also disassemble it after Sukkot ends. You need only provide a reasonably level space as a site, and a place to store the materials for the other 51 weeks of the year. To discuss this further, see the model, or reserve a Sukkah, email Marty Sklar or Stephen Baum immediately.

We will have our annual sukkah “hop” on Sunday afternoon, October 3. If you would like to be a host and have your sukkah to be on the list of those to which people are invited, please let Marty Sklar know as soon as possible. We will include the list in a later mailing.

There will be a special Sukkah Decorating Party for Temple Tots and their families om Sunday the 26th from 10:30-11:30 am. For more info and to reserve a space, contact Pamela Landau 781-453-2577.

Pikuach Nefesh (Saving a Life)
“He who saves a single life, it is as if he has saved the whole world.”

Two members of our community have recently been diagnosed with leukemia and are in dire need of a suitable donor for a bone marrow transplant. The most likely matches will be from people of Ashkenazic Jewish descent. Please take the time to join the National Bone Marrow Registry at one of these upcoming events. the process is quick and simple (a small bood sample).

Several members of our community have ties to Dennis Ozer (he and his wife Debra Goodman are former members of TA) and have been touched by his story, which is recounted on a special web site. The drive will be held at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC i Newton on Sunday, October 3, from 11 am to 4 pm. More details are on the site.

A separate drive has been set up by the friends and family of Judy Jacobs. This drive will be on Sunday, September 26th
from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Newton Marriott Hotel (2345 Commonwealth Ave, Newton, MA 02466). For further information contact Stan at 413-253-5565.

There is a national registry of bone marrow donors, so if you go to either of these drives, you may help either of these—or many other—patients. (If you have already registered previously, you need not do so again.)

Summer Camp Info
Yes, we know that fall just started, but it’s not too early to begin thinking about next summer for your kids. Please join us for a discussion on “Planning a Jewish Summer Camp Experience for Your Child” on Sunday, October 3, from 10:00-11:30 am in the Youth Room.

Selecting a summer program for your child deserves a good deal of thought. A choice that reflects your child’s interests, needs, and abilities will provide a truly rewarding experience and a lifetime of memories. Jewish Summer Camping is a proven strong, Jewish identity builder! Come hear from some ‘camp experts’ and receive guidance and information on summer camps and programs for children and teens, up to 18 years old. We've done the research and viewed the programs in action. Let us share our knowledge with you.

Let us know if you will be attending. Please contact Terri Swartz Russell, Family Educator.

On the Web Site

A few corrections. First of all, thanks to those who noticed that in our last mailing, our masthead had a spelling error! This edition correctly spells “Coming” with only one “m.”

Our list of Maccabbi Game participants was incomplete. Yasher koach to Matt Bernstein , along with all of the other participants. Apologies for the inadvertent omission.

We have some new picture albums up: the JTS trip and the TA Sukkah builders.

We have updated pages on Family Ed (including a full listing of all of this year’s Family Ed programs) and Adult Ed and on programs for tots.

The newest Shofar is also on-line.

The President’s High Holiday appeal speech has been posted.

As soon as possible, we will post Rabbi Perkins’s HH sermons as well.

Shanah tovah and gmar hatimah tovah to all!
