  • TISHA B’AV - MONDAY, JULY 26
  •

This coming Monday evening, more importantly than being the opening night of the DNC, is Erev Tisha B’Av, which is a day of national mourning and fasting, in memory of the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem in 586 BCE and 70 CE.

Please join us at 8:30 as we will meet in the Chapel for a brief program to be led by Rabbi Perkins, followed by the Maariv service and the chanting of Aicha, the book of Lamentations, a beautifully written poem recounting the sadness and calamity witnessed by the prophet Jeremiah.

  • SUMMER SERVICES
  •

Please note that we are continuing our regular program of services throughout the summer, which includes Shabbat mornings at 9:15, Monday mornings at 6:45, and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 7:30.

This Saturday following our Shabbat service, Cantor Gelman will lead us in a study session on the oft-overlooked Biblical Book of Proverbs. This is a continuation of a prior study session, but you need not have attended that one to enjoy the one this Shabbat.

  • KESHER COMMITTEE UPDATE
  •

When school is out and meetings and activities come to a halt in favor of lazy days of summer, the Kesher Committee is still active. Please read the update on our Kesher activities, contributed by our committee co-chair Ronni Eisenberg, and please volunteer your time to help out.

  • REPORT FROM RABBI PERKINS IN ISRAEL
  •

Dear Friends, I am having a wonderfully stimulating time here in Israel...” reports Rabbi Perkins, who has been spending the past few weeks at the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. His musings make for a wonderful read. Click here for the full text.

  • HOLIDAY SCHOOL TEACHER SOUGHT
  •

Holiday School is looking for volunteers to teach and lead music in each of our sessions. Holiday school is once a month on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30-5:00 pm.  Music is held during the class at 4:30 for about 15-20 minutes.  We have a great group of pre-schoolers who have a great time learnings about the holidays by doing crafts, listening to stories and singing/dancing to songs. If you are interested in having some fun once a month please call Liz Krebs at 781-326-3503 or email her at krebs96@comcast.net.

Terrorism’s Toll: Israel and Argentina: Sunday, July 25, 2004 at 12:00 Noon, at Christopher Columbus Park (directly behind Quincy Market, accessible via the Haymarket and Aquarium T stops)
On July 25, the eyes of the world will be on Boston for the Democratic National Convention as thousands of international journalists converge on the city. Take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity for the Jewish community to remember victims of terrorism in Israel and Argentina. In commemorating Tisha B'Av, we remember the destruction of our ancient Temples and the other tragedies that have befallen our people throughout the years. Today, terror threatens the safety and security of Jewish people around the world. Four years of violence in Israel has killed more than 1,000 men, women and children and wounded thousands. Ten years ago this week, terrorists in Argentina killed 84 people of all faiths when they bombed the country's central Jewish agency.
Together as a community, we will hear family members of the victims share their stories and we will read aloud the victims' names . The mournful wail of 30 shofars will open and close this important community gathering to remember the victims and seek hope for the future.
This event is sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, The Argentinean Jewish Relief Committee, The Israel Project, and many other community organizations. Click here for a list of co-sponsors and for more information.

Please join us in welcoming the 2004 Democratic National Convention to Boston at a Community Celebration. Special Guests include
Senator Hilary Clinton and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Invited Special guests include the Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate John Edwards, Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle, and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
Sunday, July 25, 2004, 4:00 – 6:00 PM, at the Seaport World Trade Center, Commonwealth Hall, 200 Seaport Boulevard, Boston. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served (Dietary laws observed).
RSVP is required for security purposes: Phone 617-988-6229 or online at www.bostoncelebration.rsvphq.com
