Hoshana Rabbah, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah

Moadim L’simcha! Enjoy these beautiful intermediate days of Sukkot.

5th-7th grade Lounge Night in the Sukkah: Come join Kadima/Junior USY for its second Lounge Night of the year! A delicious Pizza dinner will be served in the Sukkah and then we’ll have the chance to use our knowledge and learn some new facts when we get the chance to build our own Sukkah models out of Candy! 7pm-8pm at the Temple Aliyah Sukkah. Please bring $5 to cover the Pizza. Please RSVP and send any questions to Alana Tilman.

Hoshanah Rabbah services wil take place on Friday morning, October 9, at 6:45 am in the sukkah. Please join us for this wonderful and unique service. We will bensch lulav, recite Hallel, read Torah, do hakafot, and beat the willow branches. A guide to Hoshanah Rabbah has been posted online.

We will have a special Minyan Shirah service for Erev Shmini Atzeret, beginning Friday evening at 6:15. We’ll be joined by Elise Barber, our new Cantorial Intern. If you haven’t yet met her, please come and introduce yourself. Elise will chant the evening service according to the Yom Tov nusach. (She will also be leading some of the davening and reading Torah on the mornings of Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah as well, so those will be additional opportunities to meet her.)

Also on Friday evening, come sing, groove, dance, and relax with Cantor Gastón at 5:30 p.m. in a short service to welcome Shabbat for children up to age 5 and their families. The dinner is currently “sold-out,” but please join us for the fun and musical services. New this year: Ruach Shabbat, a special service for older siblings 5-and-up, running concurrently with Sha-La-Lom Shabbat! Children with September and October birthdays should come for a special Shabbat Birthday Celebration.

On Saturday, shaharit services begin at 9:00. We will celebrate the holiday with the reading from the book of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), with its special trope. We will also recite Yizkor.

Our Simchat Torah celebration begins this Saturday night with Maariv at 6:15, and going until about 8:45. We’ll have apples and pastries for snacks, flags for waving, hakafot, skits, and of course, lots more singing and dancing. The evening will be full of opportunities for families to learn and celebrate Simchat Torah together and we will also have special, separate activities for younger children. Simchat Torah: Please join us for our “360° Torah Adventure.”

Our Sunday morning Simchat Torah programs begin at 9:00. We will celebrate the b’nai mitzvah of Ryan and Ben Pasculano, youth services, and hakafot. Rabbi Gordon will read the last aliyah from Deuteronomy; Elise Barber will read the first aliyah from B’reishit. Chairs of the Hesed and Social Action committees will be honored with aliyot. There will also be Creative Morning Services and Activities for kids, with a creative and interactive morning Simchat Torah service from 10:30-12:30. There will be three children services: a Kindergarten and 1st grade service, a 2nd and 3rd grade service, and 4th-6th grade service. There will also be lots of singing, dancing, communal hakafot, games, and a special kiddush for the kids with ice cream, cookies, and more!

Adult Ed kicks off with guest speaker Manes Kogan, next Tuesday, October 13

Come meet Rabbi Manes Kogan, author of the book Fables from the Jewish Tradition, as we kick of this fall’s Adult Education Course, on Tuesday, October 13, at 7:45 pm. For more information, see the beautiful flyer online.

Sisterhood Paid Up Supper —next Wednesday, October 14

There is still time to register for Paid Up Supper ‘09, on Wednesday, October 14th. Boutiques begin at 6:30 pm, with dinner at 7:45 pm. Please join us as we welcome Barbara Waterhouse, Executive Director of “Circle of Hope .” Ms. Waterhouse will kick off Temple Aliyah’s Year of Social Action by discussing the needs of fragile families in the Greater Boston area and how our sisterhood can make a difference. Men’s Club Programs

Men’s Club Membership: With the approach of fall, Temple Aliyah Men’s Club is once again gearing up for a busy year of social and educational programs and events. Men’s Club is a vital arm of our synagogue community. Men’s Club needs your participation to help strengthen our Jewish community by involving Jewish men in Jewish life. Please join us by sending your dues of $54 to
the Temple Office.

The Men’s Club will hold an open Board Meeting this Thursday night, Ocober 8, at 7:45 pm, in the sukkah (weather permitting). Please join us to discuss the programs and activities for this coming year.

Men’s Club annual Paid-Up Supper: We have secured a great speaker. Tom “Satch” Sanders, one of the Celtics Legends, will join us on Thursday, November 5 at 6:30 pm. In 13 NBA seasons, Satch contributed to 8 championship titles. His #16 is proudly displayed at the Garden as one of the Celtics retired number banners. Satch will regale us with stories of Russell, Cousy, Havlicek and Red and give us his perspectives on the current Celts team. We expect a capacity crowd, so you don’t want to be shut out. The cost is $20 for Men’s Club members and $25 for non-members. Enjoy the good company and a great deli buffet. We encourage you to bring non-Temple members, friends, and colleagues. Spread the word! Friday Night Jammin’ with Cantor Gastón

Join Cantor Gastón on Thursday nights, October 22 and 29, at 8:00 pm, followed by a special Minyan Shirah on Friday November 6, at 6:15 pm. Come to these two workshops with Cantor G to get more familiar with the great melodies and harmonies of our Minyan Shirah Friday Night Service. Instruments are welcome at the sessions (but please not on Shabbat).

Post-Kiddush special Shabbat discussion on October 17

Following services on Shabbat morning, October 17th, Rabbi Perkins will lead a post-kiddush study session, “Ethics in the Real World: How Far Should Israel Go to Free a Captive Soldier?” The topic is obviously prompted by the recent release of 19 female Palestinian prisoners to obtain a videotape of Gilad Shalit. Rabbi Perkins will share rabbinic perspectives on the extent of the duty under Jewish law to free captives. Please join us.

Kesher Movie night October 25

Please join us for Kesher Movie Night on Sunday evening, October 25th at 7:00 pm to see The Impossible Spy, the true story of Eli Cohen, an Israeli citizen recruited by the Mossad to spy on Syria in the 1960’s. The Impossible Spy tells the story of Cohen’s undercover life in Syria where he posed as a wealthy textile merchant and befriended high-ranking officials. Cohen’s mission was vital to the outcome of the Six Day War in June 1967. The Kesher Committee invites you to join us and view this dramatic tale.

Reading Tutors needed

We need more volunteer Reading Tutors at the Philbrick Elementary School in Roslindale. Our team is in its 14th year tutoring children in Grades K-3, at the school. The Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy is providing Tutor Training at several locations this fall. Please e-mail Team Leader, Judy Varon, for information and training dates.

“Food for Thought” Day — Save the Date — November 8

Save the date for a Temple-wide Social Action event: “Food for thought: A Day to Address Hunger”, on Sunday, November 8 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Speakers from a variety of hunger-related organizations, including Long Island Shelter, Yad Chessed, Boston Medical Center, Mazon, Heifer International, and Family Table will present information about their work. We’ll have age-appropriate activities, a cooking demonstration and booths with opportunities for learning and volunteering. This event is for every congregant of every age and is in lieu of Religious School on November 8. Admission fee is a box of pasta or raisins for Family Table. More information to follow.

USY Georges Island cruises for all ages — October 18

There is still a chance to sign up for this great NERUSY kickoff event, but you must hurry! Come sail with USY on 3 separate cruises: one for Senior USY, one for Junior USY, one for Kadima. (All three boats leave from the same dock.) Sunday October 18th. The cruise is from 2:15-6:15 pm (information on when the busses will be leaving and returning will be available soon). The cost is $35.00 per USYer, which includes bus transportation from Temple Aliyah or Prozdor and back to Temple Aliyah, refreshments, DJ, Boston Harbor Cruise, a visit to George’s Island, and a Magician on the Kadima Boat! Minyan Shirah schedule

We will have Minyan Shirah as part of our Erev Shmini Atzeret service this Friday evening. The next four Minyanei Shirah will take place on October 16th, October 23rd, November 6th and November 20th. Each service begins at 6:15 pm and concludes by 7:15 pm. Please join us for these, warm, haymische, and musical services. This is a great way to begin Shabbat and to de-stress from the busy week that is ending. If you haven’t been before, don’t be intimidated—come to this very accessible, welcoming experience. And you can learn the melodies from Cantor Gastón (see above).

PALS Pumpernickel Puppets: PALS (Preschool And Little Siblings) invites preschoolers to enjoy the Pumpernickel Puppets at 10 am Sunday, October 18, at Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston, 60 Stein Circle, Newton. Tales and more tails will abound as the Pumpernickel Puppets present two animal shows, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Lion & The Mouse, Children will delight in these classic stories brought to life by large and lovable puppets.

PALS Dino Adventures: PALS also invites preschoolers to “Dino Adventures” at 9 am on Thursday, October 22, also at Solomon Schechter Day School . Amateur excavators will be able touch fossils and dinosaur relics, as well as meet live animals that resemble extinct dinosaurs. Families invited to Schechter Open House: Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston will host an admission Open House for prospective students and their families at 9:00 am on Sunday, Oct. 25. Families will be able to tour the Lower School at 60 Stein Circle in Newton, visit classrooms, see art facilities, learn about the dual curriculum in both secular and Judaic studies, find out about financial aid programs, and meet members of the school community. New England Friends of the IDF is holding their annual dinner on Monday evening, November 16 at Gann Academy. This year, the focus is on soldiers from outside Israel who have chosen to enlist in the IDF and don't have family in Israel. For the event, the organization will host a couple of these soldiers who are now serving in the IDF and also former IDF enlistees. They will speak and answer questions about their experience. There will also be other speakers and food by Andrew Caterers. It is always a very moving and educational evening. The NEFIDF dinner committee is looking for three volunteers to register attendees at the dinner (and of course, be a guest for the program). Some members of Temple Aliyah have helped out in the past and were glad they did! If you would like to volunteer (about a 3-hour commitment), please contact Ronnie Eisenberg.

The Neponsset Valley Philharmonic Orchestra in Concert at Showcase Live: Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 3:00 pm, at 23 Patriot Place, Foxborough. There is ample free parking. The Beantown Brass Quintet will hold a recital on October 18, 2009 at 4:00 pm at The Center for the Arts, 14 Summer Street, Natick, MA. This brass ensemble include TA member Rich Kesner on trombone and euphonium. The BBQ will perform as part of the Arts Series at TCAN. The recital will be a benefit for the Center but will also be a fun learning experience and a great concert for all involved. Tickets may be obtained through the TCAN site or at the door.
