Mazal Tov

Mazal Tov to TA member Dr. Cliff Saper on being named this past week to membership in the Institure of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences. Being an IOM member is a highly prestigious recognition of individuals who have demonstrated outstanding scientific achievement and commitment to service, described by one of this year’s honorees as being equivalent to being named to the Hall of Fame. Cliff is the James Jackson Putnam professor of neurology and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; his lab focuses on the integrated functions maintained by the brain’s hypothalamus such as regulation of wake–sleep cycles, body temperature, and feeding.

Men’s Club Paid Up Supper — Thursday, November 5

It's that time of year for the Men's Club annual Paid-Up Supper and we have secured a great speaker. Tom “Satch” Sanders, one of the Celtics legends, will join us on November 5 at 6:30 pm at the Temple. In thirteen NBA seasons, Satch contributed to eight championship titles. His retired #16 number banner is proudly displayed at the Garden. Satch will regale us with stories of Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, and Red and give us his perspectives on the current Celts team. We expect a capacity crowd, so you don’t want to be shut out. The cost is $20 for Men's Club members and $25 for non-members. Enjoy the good company and a great deli buffet. We encourage you to bring non-Temple members, friends, and colleagues. Spread the word!

Shabbaton — December 11–12

Please make plans to join us for our Shabbaton weekend in December. This year’s program is dedicated in honor of Rabbi Perkins’ eighteen years of service to Temple Aliyah.

Our Shabbat will begin on Friday evening with Kabbalat Shabbat services, dinner, and guest speaker Rabbi Harold Kushner. Rabbi Kushner will also deliver the D’var Torah at services on Saturday morning, which will be followed by a special kiddush. Saturday evening will be a special night of tribute in honor of Rabbi Perkins in honor of his “chai” years of service. Please watch your mail for a formal invitation as well as future editions of ComingUp and the ePulse for full details.

In the meantime, please consider sending in a special greeting to Rabbi Perkins in the tribute book that we are preparing. An email was sent earlier this evening by our President, Stephen Baum, encouraging everyone to do this; you can see a copy of that email here. In order to allow for printing of the booklet, submissions are due by this Friday, October 30. If you have any questions about the booklet or about the whole weekend, please send them to Nancy Finn.

Israel Interfaith trip with Rabbi Perkins

Registration f orms are now due for anyone interested in participating in the Temple Aliyah and Carter Memorial United Methodist Church Interfaith Israel Encounter. The trip, about which Rabbi Perkins spoke in his sermon on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, is intended for individuals from both of our communities who would like to learn about (1) the Jewish connections with the Land of Israel; (2) the Christian connections with the Holy Land; (3) the complex nature of the State of Israel and of its significance to Jews as well as Christians; and (4) one another. We held a meeting at Carter Church last Thursday evening. We’re rapidly approaching the date by which airline tickets must be purchased. Anyone who might be interested in participating in this unique opportunity should get in touch with me as soon as possible.

The trip is scheduled for February 14-22, 2010, coinciding with school vacation week. A preliminary itinerary is posted online, as well as a registration form. Please email Rabbi Perkins with any further questions.

In the Community

Welcome Rabbi Capers Funnye to Boston! The Synagogue Council of Massachusetts is sponsoring “Path of the Spirit: An African-American Rabbi’s Spiritual Journey” on Wednesday, October 28, 7:30 pm at Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Chestnut Hill. Rabbi Capers Funnye, spiritual leader of Chicago’s Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation, will share the remarkable story of his personal inner quest and journey into Judaism and the rabbinate. Although Funnye is Michelle Obama’s cousin, it is not his relationship to the Obamas, but rather the passion of his commitment to building bridges, that is so compelling. Tickets, beginning at $20 per person ($10 for seniors 65+ and students), are available at the door or in advance by calling 617-244-6506, ext. 19, or by visiting the Synagogue Council web site.

Synagogue 3000's Synagogue Studies Institute is proud to release its report, “Bringing Conversations about Israel into the Life of American Congregations.” Authors Alex Sinclair and Esti Moskovitz-Kalman discuss the new conversation needed in American synagogues regarding Israel. In the past, "Israel engagement" has meant lending political and philanthropic support to the beleaguered Jewish State. Today it must mean something different, something more personal. Download the full report at S3K’s site.
