The Essence of Jewish Belief

Tuesdays, October 23, 30; November 6, 13, 20, 27; and December 4 / From 7:45 to 9:15 pm

Rabbi Carl Perkins

Is there an essence to Jewish belief? Must – or, should – all Jews believe in God, or believe that the Torah is divinely inspired, or, for that matter, believe that the mitzvot (Jewish religious obligations) are incumbent upon all of us to obey? What does the word “God” in sentences such as these even mean? And what is the meaning of the word “belief”? In any event, which is more important: (proper) belief or (proper) practice? Come to this seven part class to explore different traditional and modern approaches to the nature and essence of Jewish belief.
