Dig deep into the weekly Torah portion and enhance your Shabbat morning experience. Join us as we explore the weekly Torah reading from literary, spiritual, and psychological perspectives. We will sometimes resolve apparent problems with the text by applying the time-honored hypothesis of multiple authorships. Sometimes we will look at interesting commentaries or Midrashim to shed light on difficult passages. We meet two Shabbatot mornings per month, finishing our study in time to join the Torah service in the main sanctuary. No Hebrew required. Come for any or all sessions.

A Taste of Daf Yomi: Study of a Page of Talmud
with Rabbi Emeritus Carl Perkins
Mondays:  8:00-9:00 am via zoom

During this upcoming year, we’re going to look at texts that explore what it means for Jews and gentiles  to live in a shared society.  What are the challenges or benefits of living in community with those who don’t share your religious, cultural, or ethnic background? Most of our study will focus on texts from tractate Avodah Zarah (“foreign worship”).  We’ll begin on October 20th by looking at idolatry. Why is the Bible so critical of it? Please join us!

Except for periodic breaks, our class meets weekly at 8:00 am via Zoom virtually every Monday morning from the fall through the spring.

If you are interested in joining our class, please email Rabbi Emeritus Carl Perkins (RabbiEmeritus@templealiyah.com) or Joan Perlman.
