Bronislaw Huberman’s establishment of an orchestra in Palestine in 1936 was not just a rescue operation of talented Jewish musicians from Europe. It also initiated a musical life that blossomed in Israel. Equally extraordinary was that Huberman auditioned both men and women at a time when no women were members of the major European symphony orchestras. The seven women who were hired by Huberman were in every sense pioneers. In the spring of 2022, in conjunction with International Women’s Day, the Israel Philharmonic decided to honor these seven original members of the orchestra – including Viola Morse’s mother – courageous and talented individuals who were the unsung heroes of their time. After a brief film, Viola Morse will share stories of her mother’s involvement in this extraordinary experience. Please join us in-person. Please email Lori Resnick to rsvp.
